Wheeling, W. Va - The Wheeling University Women's and Men's Track and Field teams mark their next stop on the road to the indoor MEC Championships with a trip to Kent, Ohio, for the Doug Raymond Invitational. PRs were flying across the team the whole meet last time out at the YSU Mid Major, and the Cardinals will look to take that momentum into this weekend.
A Cardinal who brought his best last week was Magnus Polkner, setting PRs on both days of competition. He would shatter the schools 1000m record for the second time in as many weeks, running a time of 2:28.60 to finish second. Just the day after, Polkner would PR again, this time in the 400m, where he ran a 52.02 for 36th. Polkner is clearly one of if not the fastest middle-distance runner in the MEC and looks to be turning up the gears just in time.
Freshman Kris Vigars would also grab a top 10 in the 500m dash, marking his second of the season so far with a time of 1:10.34. Hunter Tomich and Taven Mayo would round out day one for the cardinals at the Doug Raymond on the track, competing in the 5000m and 60m dash respectively, running times of 16:29.18 and 7.65.
Day one for the men would be kicked off with a PR from Tyler Crook in the mile. The graduate would run a time of 5:13.60, with teammate Reddick Moore also competing in the event and running the slightly quicker time of 4:58.65. The 200m would see Kris Vigars and Erick Berroa competing, running times of 24.28 and 23.58. In the field events, both Felix Manyani and Marcelin Tote would enter the long jump, finishing with jumps of 5.38 and 5.33 for 39th and 40th respectively.Â
Only two lady Cardinals would compete in day one of the women's meet, those being Madison Conrad and Jade Trowell. They would make the most of it however, with Conrad placing 11th in the 5000m with a time of 19:05.55, and Trowell placing 13th in the 500m, running an impressive 1:23.20.
Day two would see more Cardinals compete, with a flurry of PRs to end the meet. In the field events, Fenne Stewart would record a PR of 9.86m in the shotput, whilst Autumn King set a PR of her own in the high jump seeded field, at a height of 1.58m. Autumn Kerchner also competed in the high jump unseeded field, jumping 1.45m. Madison Conrad would add her name to the list of PRs in the 400m, running a time of 1:04.14, whilst Lucinda Banks would set her PR in the 3000m with a time of 12:11.39. Jade Trowell would return to the track on day two to race in the 800m, where she placed 24th with a time of 2:26.11.
The PRs achieved in Youngstown last weekend demonstrate the Cardinals' ability to compete strongly amongst a challenging Division I field and will serve as confidence builders for the team as they look ahead to this weekend's meet in Kent and the ever-closer indoor MEC Championships. Events for the Doug Raymond Invitational get started on Friday afternoon, February 6th, with the meet lasting two days. Three Cardinals will also be sent to the University of Michigan on Saturday, February 7th.
