Wheeling, W. Va. - The 2021-22 season was a big one for the Wheeling University Women's Golf team as they put together one of the best seasons in recent history. They brought home their third Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championship in the fall and followed that up with their first trip as a team to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship in program history. Along the way, they also got recognized individually with Head Coach Sue Vail winning the MEC Coach of the Year and Emily Holzopfel winning the MEC Women's Golfer of the Year Award. The team now embarks on their title conference championship title defense with the release of their Fall 2022 schedule.
With four of their top five golfers from last season returning, the Cardinals have plenty of experience under their belt heading into the season. Leading the way is the reigning MEC Women's Golfer of the Year Emily Holzopfel, who won four individual tournaments last season, including both the Fall MEC Championship and the MEC Spring Classic. Joining her will be Zoila Herrera, Kylee Tolliver, and Nicole Lincicome as they try and make it two straight MEC Championships. Vail will once again have an experienced team on her side and with the addition of young talent looks to keep the program moving in a winning direction.
The season kicks off for the Cardinals on Sunday, September 4th, when they head to Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon for the University of California PA Invitational. It is the same event that got the Cardinals' season started a year ago, and they look to start things strong. The following week, they head to the Charleston Invitational for their first MEC event as they get a look at the competition they will face around the conference. The first two weeks will give the Cardinals a good gauge as to where they stand and what they need to do to improve as they head down the stretch run towards the MEC Championships.
They then have a short turn around as they play the following weekend at the Michael Corbit Classic on September 18th and 19th at Whispering Woods Country Clun in Erie, PA. They wrap up the regular season at the Eagle Invitational, hosted by Ashland University, September 24th and 25th at Ashland Golf Course. Then, the title defense begins as they head to the MEC Championships at Avalon Lake Country Club. The three-day event will run October 3rd through the 5th with the MEC Championships being crowned on October 5th.
The Wheeling University Women's Golf team will report to camp on Sunday, August 21st, before kicking off their season with the CAL-U Invitational on Sunday September 4th. To view the entire Fall 2022 Women's Golf Schedule Click HERE.
