The Wheeling University Women's Golf team got the final event of the 2025/26 season underway today as they travelled down to Fairmont, West Virginia to compete in the Mountain East Conference Spring Championship. It was a positive day for the team, as Sophomore Brielle Milhoan tops the leaderboard after one round, with Senior Ella Keffer not far behind her in 10th as the team sit 4th.
Milhoan started what would be the best round of her collegiate career to date with a steady 3-over 38 on the front 9. She would bogey 10, but get the shot straight back on the par 4-13th, which she birdied to place herself 3-over and in a share of 1st with 5 holes to go. Despite making 5 bogeys in her last 5 holes, Milhoan would finish with an 8-over 78 to keep a 3-way tie for 1st place going into tomorrow's final round.
Senior Ella Keffer would shoot a pair of 41s on each side for a 12-over 82 to place her within striking distance of first position going into tomorrow. With a strong finish and an all-tournament team honour in Octobers' MEC Championships, Ella stands in good stead to take home All-MEC First Team honours tomorrow, in what has been a very strong senior year for Keffer that has included her first collegiate victory at the Pipestem Collegiate.
Rounding out the scoring 4 for Wheeling today were Freshmen Ivana Alvarez and Kaily Banal. Despite an unfortunate 11 on her first hole, Alvarez went only 8-over in her final 17 holes, including birdies on 3 and 16, to finish the first day at 16-over and put herself inside the top 20. Banal too birdied the second hole, but would struggle on the back 9 to finish with 98 and a share of 29th.
The team standings for the 2026 MEC Spring Championships are tight, with the Cardinals only 4 shots back of Fairmont State in 3rd place. Charleston and Glenville sit in 1st and 2nd, with Wheeling 29 and 21 shots behind the two respectively.
The Wheeling University Women's Golf team return to action for the final days play of the 2026 MEC spring championship tomorrow, April 13th, with tee times for Wheeling beginning at 9:50.
