Wheeling, W. Va. - As the 2022 MEC Spring Classic moved to round two, teams were set to face bitter cold temperatures with highs set to reach the mid-thirties. The Wheeling University Women's Golf team would look to better their positioning from day one but would end up dropping one spot to finish fifth overall in the tournament. The back half of Wheeling's lineup improved on their day one scores, but it wasn't enough to help them climb the leaderboards.
The biggest improvement from day one to day two came from freshman Nicole Lincicome, who dropped her score by 10 strokes, finishing day two with a score of 87. She began the day on hole eight, and had a pretty successful back nine, shooting +7 on those nine holes. In total, she picked up par on half of the holes on the day, with five of those pars coming on the back nine. She finished 26th overall with a score of 184 and helped her team have all four of their golfers finish in the top 30 of the event. Junior Kylee Tolliver also saw a big improvement, dropping her score from 97 to 91. Tolliver hit par seven times throughout the day as she looks to build off this performance.
After leading the event through day one, junior Emily Holzopfel would finish in a tie for second in the field after shooting an 87 on day two. She shot a +4 on the front nine, picking up a big birdie on hole three towards the end of her run. However, the back nine caused her fits throughout the event as she shot +11 and raised her score. Olivia Zampedro would round out Wheeling's card with an 87 of her own as she finished 13th in the field. Zampedro finished with five pars on the day and saw the smallest increase in her score, adding just one stroke from day one.
For the Cardinals, the MEC Spring Classic was a chance for them to get their feet back under them on their journey towards the NCAA Regional Invitational later this season. They have three more invitationals separating them from that tournament as they look to continue to improve their scores. While they may not have finished where they wanted in this event, there are still a few more chances for them to prepare for the Regionals.
The Wheeling University Women's Golf team returns to action on Monday, April 4th, when they head to the NC4K Classic.
