Hobbs Strong WCU Battlefield Performance Earns MEC Women's Golfer of the Week

Wheeling, W. Va. - As the run through the Atlantic Region continued, the Wheeling University Women's Golf team traveled out to West Chester University for the WCU Battlefield, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was another strong finish for junior Sawyer Hobbs, as she led the Cardinals for the third straight event, and earned honors from the Mountain East Conference (MEC). On Wednesday, she was named the MEC Women's Golfer of the Week, presented by The Healthplan, earning the honor for the second time this season.

Hobbs is coming off a tie for 10th in the WCU Battlefield, shooting an 82 (+10) to finish tied with Millersville's Gerner for the top 10 spot. It was the third straight tournament in which Hobbs finished top 10 in the field, coming off a tie for ninth at the most recent ODU Champions event. She used a consistent approach throughout the round, and started with three straight pars on the first three holes. She would finish with five total pars on the front nine, shooting a 42 (+6) as she hit the turn. She would hit par twice more on holes 11 and 13, but her biggest performance came on hole 15. She would pick up her only birdie of the round, and would finish out the back nine with back-to-back pars to finish at +10 for the afternoon.

Hobbs has been the leader for the Cardinal's women's golf program this season, shooting an average round score of 77.0 through four rounds, and has been a top 10 finisher in each of the team's three events. She leads the Cardinals with five birdies across her four rounds played, with her hole 15 birdie at WCU being her fifth of the season. Hobbs had to battle through the elements throughout the day in Gettysburg, and was able to stay consistent throughout the night. She finished third among her fellow MEC competitors in the field, finishing five strokes behind Glenville State's Seeley and one stroke behind the Pioneer's Czapla for the top spot in the conference.

With Hobbs winning the MEC Women's Golfer of the Week award, the Wheeling Athletics Department has now had six student-athletes earn conference player of the week awards this season. Hobbs is taking home her second honor of the season, and has won each of the two conference honors of the week for the team this season. Hobbs joins Wheeling University Football player Jalen Higginbotham and Men's Soccer player Alberto Madail in being honored this past week in their respective sports.

The Wheeling University Women's Golf team returns to action on Saturday, September 26, when they head to the Grand Valley State Invitational with tee times beginning at 9 AM.
