Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University women's soccer team will continue Mountain East Conference play Sunday afternoon when the Cardinals welcome rival West Liberty to Bishop Schmitt Field for a 4 p.m. matchup. Wheeling enters the contest at 0-4 overall and 0-2 in MEC play, while the Hilltoppers come to Wheeling at 0-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Cardinals are coming off a 3-0 setback against Frostburg State in Wednesday's home opener. Wheeling held the Bobcats scoreless through the opening 45 minutes before Frostburg scored three times in a four-minute span early in the second half. Goalkeeper Madison Reis-Elbara continued her strong start to the season with 10 saves, giving her 30 saves through the Cardinals' first four matches. Jeanery Diaz remains Wheeling's leading scorer with two goals on the season.
West Liberty enters Sunday's matchup after suffering a 2-0 loss to Point Park Wednesday night. The Hilltoppers were held to just three shots, including two on goal, while goalkeeper Kaisa Vale made six saves. Point Park scored once in each half, with Charisma Arteaga opening the scoring in the 41st minute before Becca Simpkins added an insurance goal just five minutes into the second half. West Liberty has now been held scoreless in each of its first four matches, while Vale has recorded 16 saves and one shutout.
Sunday's contest marks the 28th meeting between the Cardinals and Hilltoppers, with West Liberty holding a 17-8-2 advantage in the all-time series. Wheeling won the teams' first meeting of the 2025 season, earning a 1-0 victory at West Liberty on Sept. 17, before the Hilltoppers answered with a 2-0 win at Bishop Schmitt Field in the regular season finale on Nov. 5.
