Women’s Soccer Returns Home to Host Charleston Sunday

Wheeling, W. Va. — The Wheeling University women's soccer team returns to Bishop Schmitt Field Sunday afternoon when the Cardinals host the University of Charleston in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup at 2 p.m. Wheeling enters the contest at 0-9-1 overall and 0-7-1 in MEC play after falling 2-0 at West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday, while Charleston comes to Wheeling at 3-4-3 overall and 3-2-3 in conference play following a 2-2 draw with Davis & Elkins.

The Cardinals are coming off a competitive effort against West Virginia Wesleyan, putting seven of their nine shots on goal despite being held scoreless. Theresah Markwei led Wheeling with four shots, all four of which were on frame, while Graceylyn Hanna added two shots with both finding the target. Alba Lopez Guerrero made five saves in goal for the Cardinals, who saw West Virginia Wesleyan score once in each half to earn the 2-0 victory.

Charleston enters Sunday's matchup after battling Davis & Elkins to a 2-2 draw Wednesday. The Golden Eagles fell behind 1-0 in the 36th minute before Li-Lou Debaecker evened the score in the 54th minute. Sydney Crowe then gave Charleston its first lead of the afternoon in the 74th minute, but Davis & Elkins'  Rafaela Leão scored in the 84th minute to bring the match level. Charleston finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on frame.

Sunday's matchup will be the 32nd meeting between the Cardinals and Golden Eagles, with Charleston holding a 19-10-2 advantage in the all-time series. In 2025, the two sides played to a 1-1 draw. Wheeling's last victory in the series came in 2013, when the Cardinals earned a 1-0 home win.

The Cardinals will look to turn their recent offensive opportunities into their first home victory of the season Sunday afternoon. With Markwei and Hanna each putting multiple shots on target in Wednesday's contest, Wheeling will look to carry that attacking pressure into its matchup with a Charleston team that has played to three draws already this season. Following Sunday's contest, the Cardinals will remain at home Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they welcome Shawnee State to Bishop Schmitt Field.
