Wheeling, W. Va. — The Wheeling University women's soccer team returned to Bishop Schmitt Field Sunday afternoon, but Concord's offense proved too much to overcome as the Cardinals fell 6-1 to the Mountain Lions. Wheeling drops to 0-8-1 overall and 0-6-1 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play, while Concord improves to 2-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference action.
The Cardinals and Mountain Lions played through the opening 27 minutes before Concord broke through with a pair of goals in a 2:40 span. Molly Watters opened the scoring in the 28th minute before adding her second goal of the afternoon at the 30:10 mark. Ela Marit Del Orbe then extended the advantage to 3-0 in the 33rd minute, giving Concord three goals in less than six minutes. Wheeling's best opportunity of the half came from
Rosie Caley, whose 29th-minute shot was saved by Concord goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough.
Concord added to its lead early in the second half when Eve Harriott scored in the 55th minute off assists from Daisy Cook and Ella Rowell. Cook then found the back of the net in the 63rd minute before Katie Garratt capped the Mountain Lions' scoring in the 81st minute. Wheeling goalkeeper
Katelyn MacInnis continued to battle throughout the afternoon, making five saves in each half to finish with 10 total stops.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the 89th minute when
Jeanery Diaz scored her fourth goal of the season. Diaz finished with two shots and one shot on goal, while
Graceylyn Hanna and
Lily Hanna each added one shot. Wheeling finished with six total shots and two on goal, while Concord recorded 21 shots and put 16 attempts on frame. Loughborough made one save for the Mountain Lions.
Wheeling will return to the road Wednesday as it takes on West Virginia Wesleyan. First touch is slated for 3 p.m.
