The Wheeling University Women's Golf team put a lid on the first event of the spring season today, concluding the 2026 Pawley's Island Beach Bash in 10th. There are plenty of positives to take from this week for the Cardinals, as they completed their first tournament with a full roster since the fall of 2024.
Highlighting the day for the Cardinals was Ivana Alvarez. The freshman today completed her first collegiate tournament with a top 50 finish, and finished just 3 over in her last 6 holes along with a birdie on the par-5 12th to card an 88 and lead the scoring for the Cardinals. Alvarez has proven this week that she can compete against the best of the bunch going forward, and will be a big asset for Thadd Obecny and the Women's Golf team going forward.
Senior Ella Keffer and sophomore Brielle Milhoan were both without their best today, but continued to fight until the end to produce a score. Keffer's bounce-back ability was on full display, as she kept her cool through tough holes, and notably made birdie on the par-5 second after a slipping up on the tricky 18th. The senior would finish the tournament in 45th shooting 92 today, with Milhoan not far behind her in 50th. The sophomore unfortunately would have too many big numbers on the scorecard today but, like Keffer, showed how she can stay calm on the course with a flurry of pars on 14, 15, and 16 when she needed it. Brielle finished her round with a par to shoot 93, 1 behind Keffer.
Rounding out the scoring for Wheeling for the second day in a row was Kaily Banal who, like Alvarez, today completed her first collegiate tournament. Although she too was without her best this week, the freshman can build on the competitive experience gained and only improve as the team moves forward to the next event. Banal finished with a round of 108 today to finish in 60th place.
The Wheeling University Women's Golf team will return to action on Wednesday, March 16th, when they travel down to Richmond, Kentucky, for the Findlay Spring Invitational.
