Wheeling, W. Va. - After batting through a four-invitational Mountain East Conference (MEC) schedule, the Wheeling University Women's Golf team takes on some of the top programs in the country in their regular season finale. They head up to Big Rapids, Michigan for the two-day Bull Dog Fall Classic, beginning Saturday, September 27th, with tee times beginning at 10 AM. The Cardinals will be sending their top two golfers to the event as they get in their final tune-up before the 2025 MEC Women's Golf Championships in a week and a half.
Last time out, the Cardinals competed at the Senator Larry Edgell Invite, hosted by Fairmont State, as they once again took their top two golfers in the field. The Cardinals would play through the first 18 holes on day one, and had one golfer in the top 10 of the event, while another sat just outside the top 20 of the event. It was moving day on day two, and the duo combined to knock one stroke off their score through the final 18 holes. The Cardinals would end up with one top 20 golfer at the event, while the other was able to drop her score by six strokes. While the Cardinals did not have a team score at the event, it was another strong individual showing for the team as they have their sites set on making it to that third day of competition.
Leading the way for the Cardinals for the fourth time this season was senior Ella Keffer, who finished 14th overall at the event. It was a strong first round that helped fuel her on the day, as she shot a 78 to get things started. It was enough to have her in a tie for seventh in the field after day one, and was able to keep her in the top 20 of the event heading into day two. Keffer was able to keep her top 20 position, despite shooting an 83 over the final 18 holes, as she finished at 161 across the three-day event. Keffer has been the leader for the Wheeling Women's Golf team throughout the season, shooting a 160 or better in three of the first four events. As she heads into Saturday's tournament play, she looks to have a bounce back in her final two regular season rounds before the conference championship.
Finishing behind her was Brielle Milhoan, who put together a two-day score of 174, sitting as he second lowest mark of the season. After a showing on day one that saw her shoot a 90 through 18 holes, it was a second day bounce back that helped her climb up the leaderboards. She was able to drop six strokes off her score, and just missed getting into the top 20 with a score of 84. It was her second lowest single round score of the season, as she finished out a strong round. She finished just one point behind her score of +33 at the Pipesteam Classic, and brought her two-round scoring average to 177.33 for the season. Milhoan missed out on the third day of the MEC Women's Golf Championships last season and is looking to make her push for the third day this year.
The 2025 Bull Dog Fall Classic will be hosted at the Katke Golf Course, a Ferris State University-owned 18-hole golf course. It is home to all Ferris State Cross Country and Golf events. The Cardinals top golfers will be tested against some of the top teams in the country, including Ferris State, Grand Valley State, and Saginaw Valley, while also seeing some top in-region opponents, including Tiffin, Gannon, and Walsh. It will be a two-day event, with each player playing 18 holes per day. Everyone will tee-off on hole one to open the day, with tee times beginning at 9 AM, and the first Cardinal tee time of the day at 10:10 AM.
