Daniels, W. Va. - Round two of the 2024 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Women's Golf Championships kicked off with an early morning tee time on Tuesday. The Wheeling University Women's Golfers were competing for a spot in the final day of competition of Wednesday and two Cardinals would make the cut. Junior
Ella Keffer and senior
Nicole Lincicome would each make the cut, with both finishing in the top 20 of the event and being one of the top five individuals from a non-advancing team.
Leading the Cardinals for the second day in a row was
Ella Keffer, who knocked four strokes off her round one score. She would finish in a tie for 15th on the day, equaling Davis & Elkins's Gadea Melgarejo with a two-day score of 172. She didn't get off to the start she wanted, going +5 on the first three holes before getting her first par of the day on hole four to get back on track. She added her second par of the day on hole six before picking her lone birdie of the round on hole seven to bring her score to +6. She would finish +9 on the front nine and looked to turn things around on the back nine. After bogeying the first hole, she would put together seven straight pars from holes 11 to 17. She finished the back nine at +3, bringing her final round score to 84. She was the third highest finishing individual in the field as she was the first Cardinal to make the cut.
The other was senior
Nicole Lincicome, who dropped an impressive 11 strokes off her day one score to shoot an 83 and finish 19th overall. Like Keffer, Lincicome had her share of struggles early on, shooting +7 after six holes. Her turnaround came on hole seven, where she picked up the first of three birdies on the day and it turned her around as she shot +7 on the front nine. The back nine saw her have the most success as it was another bounce back that got her going. It came on hole 13 as she set herself right with a par and started her best stretch of the day. She would follow the par with her second birdie of the day on hole 14 and added a third on hole 16 as she had a string of five holes where she shot –2. That string would give her the push she needed as she finished +4 to round out the day. It was enough to get her the final individual spot in the field as she makes a push in her final MEC Women's Golf Championship event.
The final Cardinal to compete on the day was Brielle Milhoan, who just ended up missing the cut, finishing 24th overall with a two-day score of 195. She would drop one stroke off her day one score, shooting a 97 to wrap up her first collegiate conference championship event. She would finish with five pars in the second round of competition and looks to continue to grow this off-season.
Day three of the MEC Women's Golf Championship tees off on Wednesday, October 9th, with tee times beginning at 8 AM.
