Johnson Takes Ninth to Lead Women to Fourth Place Finish at Vulcan Invitational

Belle Vernon, PA. – After a strong showing in day one of the Vulcan Invitational, the Wheeling University Women's Golf team came back even stronger on day two. They would finish the tournament in fourth place overall, with a combined score of 660, finishing 28 strokes behind first place Alvernia. Two Cardinals finished in the top 20 for the event, including another strong day on the course for Marra Johnson.

After setting a new PR on day one, shooting a 79 through the first 18 holes, Johnson came back in day two and added another strong effort with an 81. She finished in the top 10 in a tournament for the first time in her career, taking ninth overall for the event with a score of 160. She raised her stroke total by two from the first round, and brings her average round score for the fall to 80. Finishing behind her came the biggest improvement from day one to day two in sophomore Nicole Lincicome. She began the tournament with an 83 on day one, and dropped that score by three strokes to post the lowest score of the day for the Cardinals at 80. It was enough to get her into the top 20 of the event, finishing 14th overall. Lincicome and Johnson are both out to strong starts and look to lead the Cardinals throughout the year.

The final two golfers for the Cardinals on day two were sophomore Ella Keffer and senior Zoila Herrera, who finished with identical scores of 86. Keffer would finish just outside the top 20, placing 21st overall with a two-day score of 167. It was her big showing on day one that saw her set a PR of 80 that powered her success as she continues to grow as a key contributor for the team. Herrera rounded things out for the Cardinals, shooting an 86 to round out her day. She finished the tournament with a 170 and placed tied for 29th in the field. The Cardinals 4th place finish in the field as one spot higher than where they placed at last season's tournament , as they kicked off 2023 with a bang.

The Wheeling University Women's Golf team returns to action on Monday, September 11th, when they head to the University of Charleston Invitational.
