Belle Vernon, PA. – After a long off-season, the 2023 season kicked off on Sunday afternoon for Wheeling Women's Golf as they headed to the Vulcan Invitational. The Cardinals had four women competing in the event, and all four women would finish in the event's top 20, with the team sitting 3rd with a combined 327 after the first 18 holes of competition. A pair of PR's from the team's two sophomores paced the Cardinal's effort as they look to continue their success heading into the final round.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was sophomore
Marra Johnson, who finished tied for third with a 79 through 18 holes. It was the first time in her collegiate career that Johnson broke the 80 stroke mark, and finished the day +8 for the round. She was three strokes off the pace of leader Olivia Martinez from Bloomsburg, and beat her previous PR by six strokes. The other PR for the sophomore class came from
Ella Keffer, who finished right behind Johnson shooting an 80. Like Johnson, it was a big PR for Keffer, who beat her previous PR by five strokes. Johnson and Keffer entered the day as number three and four in the lineup, but both showed they have the potential to lead this team when they need to.
Following the sophomores was junior
Nicole Lincicome, who finished 17th, shooting an 83. After averaging 85 during the spring season last year, Lincicome lowered that number by two to start the year and will look to be a consistent presence for the team. With a smaller roster this year, the Cardinals are going to rely on the individual performances of their golfers to measure their success, and the two-time All-MEC golfer will look to lead that effort. Rounding out day one for the Cardinals was senior
Zoila Herrera, who finished in a tie for 18th with an 84. Herrera had some strong showings throughout her career, and starts 2024 with one of her best showings. All four Cardinal golfers shot an 85 or better at the event, and look to climb into the top tournament spot in round two.
The Wheeling University Women's Golf team wraps up the Vulcan Invitational on Monday, September 4th, when they play their final 18 holes. The round will tee off at approximately 9 AM.
