Elkins, W. Va. – After all four Cardinal golfers shot a sub-90 score in the first round of the Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational, the Wheeling Women's Golf team returned to action for round two on Tuesday. All four Golfers lowered their scores from day one as the team finished third overall at the event. In their final regular season Mountain East Conference (MEC) event, the Cardinals proved they can compete with the best of the best in the conference.
The biggest improvement from day one to day two came from junior
Nicole Lincicome, who dropped her score by nine strokes from day one to day two. She shot an 80 in the second round of the event, tying for her lowest score of the season. She rebounded from shooting an 89 on day one of the event and lowered her average round score for the fall season to 83.2 as she prepares for her third run at the MEC Championships. Lincicome was the Cardinal's second best golfer at last season's Championship event, and looks to help secure her third straight All-MEC title. The next two golfers were tied for second as
Zoila Herrera and
Marra Johnson each shot an 81 in the second round of the event.
Johnson was the only one who did not lower her score, shooting one stroke higher than her day one score. She finished with a 161 across the two-day event and would place seventh in the field. It was Johnson's second top 10 finish of the season, as she golfed against some of the best in the conference. She looks to pick up her first All-MEC honor of her. career this season.
Zoila Herrera shot an identical 81 in the second round of the event, shooting the lowest score she has had of the fall. Herrera is the veteran of the group, entering her fourth Championship event and looks to lead the Cardinals. Rounding things out for the team was
Ella Keffer, who dropped her score by five points to finish at an 84 for the final 18 holes. Keffer has seen her average sit at 85 for the fall season as she continues to make her mark for the team.
