Wheeling, W. Va. - After a strong showing at the 2023 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Spring Golf Classic, the Wheeling University Women's Golf team will get to play one final event before heading into the offseason. They will play their first home event since the 2018-19 season when they host Point Park University in a home dual match at the Wheeling Country Club with tee times beginning at 10 AM. It will be one last chance for the seniors to compete in collegiate golf and they will get to go out in front of their home fans.
Last time out, the Cardinals competed in the final conference spring golf event of the season when they played in the 2023 MEC Spring Golf Classic. The team got out to a strong start on day one, sitting just one stroke out of first place with a combined score of 329 through the first 18 holes of play. They saw a PR set on day one and had the top golfer in the field as they looked to build off of that momentum on day two. The Cardinals would end up dropping to third before the day was over, but still had a strong day with all five golfers cracking the event's top 20 and all five shooting scores of under 86 or better. When the day was over, the Cardinals had two player's named to the All-MEC Women's Golf team, giving them multiple All-MEC players for the second year in a row.
Leading the way was senior
Emily Holzopfel, who took home All-MEC honors for the second time in her career. After leading the way on day one, shooting a 74 through 18 holes, Holzopfel was sitting high with her lowest score of the spring season. She would end up finishing second overall after round two, shooting a 78 to finish the two-day event with a combined 152 though the 36-hole event. With the effort, the senior lowered her spring average to 78.2 over the team's five rounds played this spring. Holzopfel is looking to finish out her spring season strong in what will be her first home event of her Cardinal career.
The other All-MEC honoree for the Cardinals was sophomore
Nicole Lincicome, who took home her second Honorable Mention All-MEC honor of her career. She didn't start out the way she would have liked to on day one, shooting a 90, but she had the biggest bounce back on the team in round 2. She improved her score by ten strokes to finish with an 80 and would take 17th overall with a combined score of 170. The other top performer for the Cardinals was freshman
Ella Keffer, who shot a PR on day one and nearly cracked the top 10, taking 12th in the field. The freshman's best round was on day one, when she shot an 81 to set a new PR. She followed it up with an 85 on day two for a two-round score of 186 as she finished out her best collegiate tournament.
As the Cardinals get ready to wrap up their spring season, they will get the opportunity to do just that in front of their home fans. It will be the first time that any of the current Cardinals got to play a home match and it will be the first time they have played at the Wheeling Country Club since the Oglebay Intercollegiate March 31st and April 1st 2019. With three seniors on this year's team, they look to end their collegiate careers on a high note, playing in front of their friends, family, and home Cardinal fans.
