Women’s Golf Takes Fourth at MEC Championships

Warren, OH. - After two rounds of play at the 2023 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championships, The Wheeling University Women's Golf Team entered round three in fourth place in the field. They were able to stand Pat in the final round finishing 4th in the tournament with a three round score of 1044. It was the sixth straight season that the Cardinals have finished in at least fourth place or better as the group looks to the offseason to continue to grow.

Leading the way on day three was Junior Nicole Lincicome, who shot an 87 And with the lowest scorer for the Cardinals for the second time in three rounds. She was in the final group to tee off on the day, and had a strong showing on the front nine. After hitting par on the first three holes, she was able to manage the middle holes and got the whole number nine sitting at +4. She reared back and had her best hole of the day on that ninth hole, using a great drive to get her on the green with a shot at Birdie. She had a long put In front of her and was able to drain it to pick up her loan birdie of the day and sit +3 heading to the back nine. She added one more par on the day on hole 17 has she finished out her day with the 87. For the third season in a row, Lincicome was able to finish in the top 20 of the event, placing 17th, up three spots from where she finished a year ago.

Finishing behind her was a tie between sophomore Marra Johnson and sophomore Ella Keffer. Johnson's day started strong on the front nine, as she hit par on three of the first four holes. as she hit par on four of the first five holes of the night. She finished with a par on hole nine to shoot +6 through nine holes. She added just one more par on the day and picked up a top 20 finish overall, placing 20th in the field , the first conference championship top 20 finish of her career. Keffer had the opposite happen as she struggled on the front nine before bouncing back on the back nine. She came back with pars on holes 10 and 11 and hit her only birdie of the day on hole 13. It was enough to help her shoot +6 over those final nine holes and she shot an 89 to finish tied for 21st in the field. Senior Zoila Herrera rounded out the field shooting a 95 on the final day, and tied with Keffer for the 21st spot.

The Wheeling University Women's Golf team now heads into the winter break as they prepare for the spring portion of their season in 2024.
