Wheeling Places 48 Student-Athletes on All-MEC Academic Team

Bridgeport, W. Va. - With the 2022 Spring season officially at a close, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released their annual Academic Awards on Wednesday with the release of the All-MEC Academic Team and the Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Cardinals had a strong showing, placing 48 athletes on the All-MEC Academic Team as they continue to excel in the classroom. The Cardinals increased their spring sport athletes on the list for the second straight year as they become well-rounded men and women.

In order to qualify for the All-MEC Academic Team, a player must have a GPA between 3.70 and 4.00 during their championship season and be an active member of the team's roster. All 11 MEC affiliated institutions were represented on this year's list and Wheeling had the 7th most student-athletes named in the conference. All nine of Wheeling's MEC affiliated Winter and Spring affiliated teams had atleast one representative on the list showing a dedication to both their work on the field as well as their classroom work.

Leading the way for the winter and spring spots was the Women's Track & Field team, who placed 11 student-athletes on the list. Right behind them was Softball (9) and a tie for third between Baseball and Women's Basketball, with each team having seven players make the list. Men's Basketball added four student-athletes, Men's Track & Field, Women's Swimming, and Wrestling each had three recipients, and Men's Swimming rounded out the list with one All-MEC Academic Team recipient. Athletic Director Carrie Hanna is proud of the success her students have shown in the classroom as they continue to pursue the Wheeling University Mission.

"We are very proud of the excellent work our student-athletes do not only on the field of competition but also in the classroom and the community," said Hanna. "Congratulations to all of this year's honorees and thank you for the work you do for our campus."
