White Sulphur, W. Va. – It was a big day for the Wheeling Women's Golf team on Tuesday as they wrapped up play at the Greenbrier College Invitational. They had two golfers finish in the top 10, with both setting new round PRs, as they finished second at the event with a combined two-day score of 644. They finished seven strokes behind the leaders, the University of Lynchburg as the team is hitting their stride at the right time.
Leading the way on day two for the Cardinals was
Emily Holzopfel, who finished with an even par at 72 that had her tie with Lynchburg's Emily Brubaker for the tournament win. She started her day strong right from the get-go sinking par on each of her first five holes of the day. She hit a Bogey on hole 6, but came back with a birdie on the ninth hole to bring her front nine score to even. She would start the back nine with a Bogey on hole 10, but then went to work hitting par on seven of the remaining eight holes. The only exception was hole 13 when she brought her score back down to even with a birdie and finished the back nine with her score still an even par. The effort was enough to tie her for first in the tournament and her second round score of 72 was a new single-round PR for the junior.
Another PR came in the second golfer spot for Wheeling as
Kylee Tolliver finished second on the team with a score of 77. She finished tied for seventh in the field with a total score of 160 and set a new single-round PR while scoring under 80 for the first time all year. No one at the tournament got off to a hotter start than Tolliver did as she sunk a birdie on the first hole of the day to get things started. She would hit par on the next three holes and another birdie on hole 5 brought her score to two under par. She ended up having some trouble on the final four holes, but her hot start kept her at +4. She started the back nine with a birdie on hole 10 and finished +1 on the final nine holes to end her best round of the season.
Third on the list for Wheeling was freshman
Nicole Lincicome, who finished with her top score of th spring so far, shooting an 81 on day two. She went +3 on the front nine as Wheeling continued their success through the first nine holes of the day. She shot her lone birdie on hole eight and was able to keep her scores low on the way to an 81.
Zoila Herrera was the Cardinals most improved golfer, going from a 96 in round one to an 86 in round two. Unlike her teammates, it was the Back Nine that was friendly to Herrera as she shot a +4 on the course's final nine holes.
Olivia Zampedro rounded out the day for the Cardinals, shooting a 101 in her second round of the event to finish the day.
It was a big day for the Cardinals as they picked up their highest finish of the spring so far with the second place finish. They were the highest ranking MEC team at the event, beating Glenville by three strokes on the field. With two golfers finishing in the top 10 of the event, the Cardinals will now try and use their momentum the rest of the way as they continue preparing for the 2022 NCAA Atlantic Regional Invitational.
The Wheeling Women's Golf team is back in action on Saturday, April 16th, when they head to Whispering Woods Country Club when they take place in the Gannon University Invitational.
