WJU Softball Drops Two to Lake Erie College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WHEELING, W.Va. – To avoid the blast of winter weather headed for Ohio Valley, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team bumped up their double header against Lake Erie College from Wednesday to Tuesday, falling in both games: 4-6 and 2-7.

The Cardinals now fall to 2-8 on the season, playing their first games at home after a long spring break trip to Florida.

"In both games, they had some very timely hitting, and we were hitting it right to them," said WJU head coach Kelli Williams. "We were doing a good job of putting the ball in play, but we hit it straight to them. Then, they got up early and we didn't make adjustments."

In the first game of the double header, the Cardinals fell behind 4-0 in the first inning. It took them till the bottom of the 5th to get on the board, when Jarah Ice hit a single through the right side to bring in Skylar Berger on an RBI. Kelsi Thompson then doubled to left to bring in Ice on another RBI.

WJU got two more back in the bottom of the 6th when Marissa Cangelosi tagged up on a fly ball to score, and Dana Achille singled to center field bringing in Berger for an RBI.

That would be as close as the Cardinals would come in game one, dropping the contest 6-4.

The bad luck continued for the Cardinals in game two.

WJU was only down 2-1 after three innings (WJU scoring off a Erika Jusko sacrifice fly), but it was as close as the Cardinals would come with Lake Erie knocking in three more runs in the 5th to pad the lead.

The Cardinals had their chances to climb back in the game however. Freshman Morgan Stohlman hit what looked like a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th, but the deep ball to left bounced off the fence,  back into play, and Stohlman had to settle for the double.

WJU takes to the road again this weekend in search of spring weather with a trip to Salem, Virginia to compete in the Salem Invitational before returning home for a seven-game stand in Wheeling.
