Wheeling, W. Va. - The fall sports season is fully underway, but before you know it winter sports season will be here. The Wheeling University Athletics Department is preparing as they hold their 2026-2027 Winter Sports Media Day inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center. The press conference will begin at noon, with all six winter sports coaches being represented as they preview their respective seasons.
Just like in the fall, all six coaches will be in the Alma Grace McDonough Center, joined by Wheeling University administration and staff. The day will begin with an opening prayer from Director of Campus Ministry Fr. David Griffin, and the event will be MC'd by Assistant Athletic Director for Communications & Engagement Zack Zeigler. Opening addresses will be given by both Athletic Director Carrie Hanna and Wheeling University president Dr. Diana Vargo. Then, each of the six winter sports coaches will come to the podium one-by-one previewing their respective seasons. After the press conference, the coaches will be available to local media in attendance for comments and exclusive interviews following the event.
Programs that will be represented at the event include Men's & Women's Swimming, Men's & Women's Track & Field, Men's Wrestling, Women's Wrestling, Women's Basketball and Men's Basketball. Head Men's and Women's Swimming Coach Will Hughes will kick things off, after leading his team to a program-best finish on both sides at the MEC/G-MAC Swimming & Diving Championships. Head Track & Field Coach Ben Healy will follow, after leading a young Cardinal team to a year of growth during the 2025-2027 season. It's on to the wrestling mat for the next speaker, with the introduction of Women's Wrestling with Head Coach Lily Sherer talking about her first-year program. Head Men's Wrestling Coach Shane Brown will follow, previewing his deepest roster yet. Rounding out the day will be Head Women's Basketball Coach Ella Skeens and Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Ricardson, with their season previews.
