Wheeling, W. Va. – With fall sports camp in full swing, the Wheeling University Athletic Training program is getting some reinforcements as they care for the athletes and get them ready for the 2026-27 season. On Thursday, the Wheeling University Athletic Department announced the hiring of Kaleb Brown as the new Assistant Athletic Trainer. After spending being a member of Wheeling's Master of Athletic Training Program's first-ever cohort, he now joins the department in a full-time capacity as he helps to care for student-athletes.
"I am thankful for the opportunity of being hired here at Wheeling University," said Brown. "It's super special now to be working in the Athletic Training department after being a recent graduate of the university's first Masters of Athletic Training Cohort."
Brown is already very familiar with the Wheeling University community, having spent the last two years as a member of the university's Master of Science in Athletic Training program. He was a part of the inaugural cohort of the program, starting in 2024. Through his 18 months in the program, Brown got hands-on experience, working with several Wheeling University athletic teams throughout the year. He would work extensively with the Wheeling University Football team during his time with the Cardinals, and was on the sidelines for several great Cardinal moments. In 2024, he would get the opportunity to travel with the Wheeling Women's Rugby team to Houston, Texas for the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) National Championship. He was on the sidelines to witness the program's first-ever national title in program history.
In the classroom, Brown was part of a group of Pioneers in the MSAT program, being one of the first in program history to present his capstone project. His project, titled "Shoulder Overuse Injuries Between Baseball and Softball Pitchers" was presented to students, faculty, and staff, representing the completion of his coursework. He completed the Board of Certification (BOC) exam in spring of 2025, officially becoming a nationally certified Athletic Trainer.
In his new role as Assistant Athletic Trainer, Brown will assist Head Athletic Trainer Nate Harshberger in the coverage of all 23 Wheeling University Athletic programs. This includes covering practices and games throughout the season, ensuring that all students are eligible to take the field, performing rehab and care of Cardinal athletes, and performing other duties as needed in the Athletic Training office. After working with the Cardinals sports programs as a master's student, Brown is already prepared for the transition as he takes on a larger role in the Athletic Training program. Harshberger is excited to welcome Brown to the full-time staff, after seeing him grow over the last few years.
"I am super excited to have Kaleb join our Athletic Training staff," said Harshberger. "Seeing him go through our AT program and now be a full-time staff member makes me proud to see how far he has come. I can't wait to see how he grows as a young professional and mentor for our student-athletes."
Brown received his Master of Science in Athletic Training degree from Wheeling University in the spring of 2026. He would complete his undergraduate studies in Athletic Training at Tiffin University, where he graduated in the spring of 2024.
