McGinnis Finds the Net in 2-1 Loss to Rams

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team (1-7-1, 1-4 WVIAC) played host to Shepherd University (2-4-1, 2-1-1 WVIAC) in a league match at James LaRosa Soccer Complex on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals cut the field in half for the majority of the game, but the visiting Rams capitalized on a pair of opportunities for a 2-1 league victory.

WJU controlled the first-half pace of play, but trailed 1-0 at the halftime. The Cardinals outshot the Rams 7-4 and earned two corner kicks to Shepherds one. In the 24th minute, the Rams sent a long pass down the field to Kasey Canterbury. Canterbury received the pass, finding Kelsey Smith about 40-yards from the frame. Smith floated the shot above the WJU keeper for the 1-0 advantage.

Jesuit continued to create favorable opportunities after the break, outshooting the Rams 9-5. Shepherd finished a second scoring opportunity when they earned a corner kick within the first five minutes of play. At 48:25, SU's Kelsey Eagan sent the corner into the box, finding Canterbury who redirected the pass into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

With 20-seconds remaining in the match, Jesuit broke the scoring silence as Jenna Klemkowsky sent a corner into the box for Ashley McGinnis. After letting the ball settle at her feet, McGinnis fired a shot into the center of the frame from the top of the box.

Wheeling Jesuit will back in action on Saturday, September 29 at James LaRosa Soccer Complex against Concord University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
