Morgantown, W. Va. - The final day of competition came to Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia on Tuesday as the 2026 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships entered their final day. The Wheeling University Men's Track & Field team would finish out strong, adding their second individual conference championship across four events on the day. As a team, the Cardinals finished 10th in the field, but doubled their point total from a season ago, puting up 30.5 points across the three days of competition.
The top day three performance would go to Alexander Rodriguez, who was one of two Cardinals to compete in the Men's Pole Vault. He would end up passing on the first several heights, entering the competition at 4.40 meters. He cleared the first height on try number one, before advancing to the 4.55 Meter height. At that height, it would take him two attempts to clear the bar, but once he did he was officially crowned the MEC Champion in the event. He would attempt one height higher, going at 4.75 meters with an attempt at the NCAA Provisional mark, and nearly got over the bar on his second attempt. However, it would end up falling just short and he claimed the Outdoor Title at 4.55 Meters. For Rodriguez, it ended a sweep of the Pole Vault titles for Rodriguez, who also won the Pole Vault title during Indoor season, as he looks to continue building in his success through the team's last chance meet schedule.
The other Cardinal to compete in the pole vault was Taven Mayo, who came into the day with a PR of 3.45 Meters. He went for it right off the get-go, setting a PR on his first vault of the day, clearing 3.65 Meters on the first try. He would follow that up with his second PR of the day, vaulting 3.80 meters on the first try, and he would move on to the 3.95 meter height. He would take three attempts at the height, but was unable to clear the bar, earning a top 10 finish in the event. He would finish 6th overall in the event, breaking his former PR by 0.35 meters. The final field event of the day was the Men's High Jump, with Jacob Legg competing for the Cardinals. He would start his day at 1.75 Meters and cleared the bar on his second attempt. That would end up being his final height as he finished 16th in the field.
The final two events of the championship would come in the relays, with the Cardinals competing in both the 4x100 and the 4x400 Meter Relays. Up first was the 4x100 Meter Relay, with Taven Mayo, Abenezer Yirdaw, Roy Paz Jr., and Erik Berroa competing in the second heat of the event. The foursome would run a time of 44.89, finishing ninth in the field to kick-off the track events. Four hours later, it was Kris Vigars, Redick Moore, Hunter Tomich, and Berroa running a lap each. They finished with a time of 3:52.66 to bring the championship to an end.
Following the championship event, the conference presented the medals to all competitors across the three days of competition. The Cardinals would send three athletes to the podium with Rodriguez, Felix Manyani, and Berroa each earning their awards. Manyani and Rodriguez were the two lone champions of the event, while Berroa took second in the Javelin to earn spots on the podium. The Cardinals doubled their points as a team in the event and was able to add one more podium finisher than they had a season ago.
The Wheeling University Men's Outdoor Track & Field team will now look ahead to the Last Chance Meet Schedule as they try to qualify for the NCAA DII National Championships.
