Huntington, W. Va. - The Wheeling Men's Indoor Track and Field team traveled to Huntington, WV to compete in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championship. Three competed on the first day of competition, with all three making top 10 in their events.
Alexander Rodriguez and Taven Mayo got the day started in the men's paul vault. Rodriguez has been ranked first in the MEC for the men's paul vault since January 23 when he competed at Kent State's Judd Logan Invitational where he had a jump of 4.45 meters. Today, Rodrguez set a new personal record (PR) when he had a jump of 4.80 meters; which allowed him to finish in first place and made him number one in the MEC. Rodriguez is also now ranked 55th in the nation for Division II Indoor Track and Field.
Taven Mayo also set a new PR for himself in the men's pole vault. Going into today, Mayo was ranked number 11 in the MEC, but with his new PR, it moved him up three places to eighth. Mayo had a jump of 3.45 meters, to make him eighth in the MEC, which was 0.25 meters better than what he jumped at Muskingum University's Muskie Meet on January 13th.
The last event that Wheeling competed in today was the men's 4000 distance medley relay. This team consisted of Redick Moore, Felix Manyani, Tyler Crook, and Hunter Tomich. These four men were able to place themselves in 10th place (and 10th in the MEC) with a time of 11:38.80.
The Cardinals will be back for day two of the MEC Championship tomorrow, February 22nd, with events starting at 11 AM.
