ELKINS, W.Va. - A stellar first round at the Mountain East Conference Men's Golf Championships from the Wheeling University Cardinals Men's Golf team as they sit in second place and went only seven over par. This stellar first round also had Cardinal freshman golfer Cormac Pearson tie for first place.
Coming in first place on the Cardinals team was Pearson, as he shot one under par on the day. On the front nine, he started with a bogey on hole one, then hit three pars in a row. On holes five and six he hit two birdies before hitting par on hole seven and hitting bogey on the final two holes of the front nine. On the back nine he did even better, hitting birdies on holes 10, 12, and 18. He only hit one bogey and hit for par the rest of the holes.Â
In second place for the Cardinals is graduate student Sean Dobson, who tied for fourth and shot even through one round. He started on hole one with a par and then hit a bogey on hole two. He bounced back and hit six straight pars before hitting bogey on hole nine. Just like teammate Pearson, Dobson too hit three birdies on the back nine on holes 10, 15, and 18.Â
Sophomore Lodin Femoen was the next Cardinal in the top four as he tied for 11th and shot three over par. Femoen picked up two bogeys on holes three and five but then bounced back, hitting a birdie on hole eight. On the back nine he picked up two more birdies but finished the back nine two over par after some birdies.Â
Sophomore Elias Ekenes-Fosback rounds out the Cardinals top four and is tied for 19th place, hitting five over par. He had a great start to the day and hit two birdies on holes three and seven. After a bogey and double bogey on the eighth and ninth holes, he finished the front nine one over. On the back nine he picked up one birdie on hole 14 but finished four over par.
Day two of the MEC Men's Golf Championships will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
