Staten Island, NY. – With the 2024 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Indoor Track & Field Championships in the rear view mirror the Wheeling Indoor Track & Field team turned their attention towards the Indoor Track & Field National Championships. A small group of Cardinals made the trip north to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York for the Fast Track Last Chance Invitational. Four different Cardinals would compete on the day as they had one last chance to either hit the NCAA Provo Mark or get themselves in position to make a run at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was the only male competitor on the day in junior
Joshua Boehm. Boehm competed in the 400-Meter Dash, which had been his best event throughout the 2023 regular season. He would pick up the lone top five finish on the day, posting a time of 48.97 seconds as he won his heat. It was enough to finish 5th overall at the event and it was enough for Boehm to hit the NCAA Provo Mark, beating the number by .04 seconds. He is one of three athletes in the MEC to hit the mark in the event as he tries to make one last push for the National Championships. On the Women's side,
Ka'niya McGowan would be the top finisher for the Cardinals as she took on the 200-Meter Dash. She would take 11th overall with a time of 25.69 in the event, finishing just .33 seconds behind her season-best time.
The Women had two more competitors on the day, with one competing in the track and the other in the field. Up first was
Deja Ryals, who competed in the 60-Meter Dash coming off her MEC Championship in the event. Ryals would earn the third top 15 finish of the day, taking 13th with a time of 7.92 seconds. Rounding out the day was the lone field event as
Jenna Smith took on the Women's Pole Vault. Smith would round out the day with a sixth place finish as she reached a height of 3.20 meters. She cleared the height on the first try, but could not get over the 3.35 meter mark to end her day.
The Wheeling Indoor Track & Field team now awaits to hear if they have any qualifiers for the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships before they transition to Outdoor Season.
