Rugby Drops BRRC Road Contest to Thomas More

Crestview Hills, KY. – After opening up Big Rivers Rugby Conference (BRRC) play last week, the Wheeling University Rugby team took conference play on the road Saturday. They battled hard throughout the night, but in the end, couldn't overcome the Saints as they fell 40-12. The Cardinals scored two tries throughout the afternoon but couldn't keep up with the high powered saints offense.

Wheeking got on the board with their first try of the game in the first half when Rua Karimazondo crossed the try line for his second try of the 2022 season. He has now scored a try in two of the team's first three games of the season and sits in a tie for second with two tries this year. However, Thomas More responded with a few tries of their own and went into halftime with the lead. The Cardinals were looking for a second half spark and would work to get the offense going. They have been a second half team in each of their first two games, scoring a combined 38 points in the game's final 40 minutes, and they would look for some of that magic again.

They would add one more second half try to their ledger when Joe Iye got across the try line. It was Iye's third try in his last two games and now sits tied for 1st with three tries on the year. He added how own conversion kick. He now has 23 points in his last three games and has been a leader for the Cardinals offense. However, that would be Wheeling's final try of the day as they fell 40-12 as they fell to the Saints and dropped to 1-1 in BRRC play over their first two weeks. Head Coach Mike Geibel acknowledged his team's mistakes throughout the day, but wants to use it as a learning experience for his guys.

"We just didn't play well today. I think we came in a little too relaxed and didn't work as hard as we needed to, and Thomas More took advantage of it. Full credit to them, they outplayed us today. They're a good team but it should have been closer than that, we just let it get away from us. We lost momentum in the first half and never recovered. We had some normal starters out with injury but no excuses from us; we should have played much better."

The Wheeling University Rugby team returns to action next Saturday, October 1st, when they hit the road against Marian University at 1 PM.
