WHEELING, W.Va - After a postponed week 1, the Wheeling University Men's Rugby team will begin its Division II 15's season tomorrow afternoon as the Cardinals host Belmont Abbey College Crusaders. Belmont Abbey enters the matchup having defeated the University of Clemson 36-0.
Last season's Fall 15's, the Cardinals started off strong winning their first three matches of season, however, final four contests would end in a tie and losses. The team finished the season with an overall record of 3-3-1 missing the Allegheny Rugby Conference playoffs.
Now it's a new season. And senior Alex Nyamunda, looks to build off his National Player of the Year season as he looks to become Wheeling's all time points leader in 15's passing Ayoub Jalli at 204.
The Cardinals also retained junior Panashe Mugorogodi, who is coming off a great NCR Playoffs last season when he scored 20 points helping the team advance to the Quarterfinals.
He would finish with 15 tries on the year, with four of those coming in the NCR Quarterfinals. He accounted for 20 of the team's 31 points during the second half as they advanced to the Quarterfinal round.
Wheeling faces Belmont Abbey for the sixth in the last three seasons. Most recently during the CRC 7s' National Title run last April defeating the Crusaders 29-10 in Boyd, MD.
The match is scheduled for 12:30p.m. at Bishop Schmitt Field.
