Browning’s Big Day Leads Wheeling at Otterbein Twilight

Westerville, OH. – In their final week of outdoor season, the Wheeling University Track & Field team split up for a pair of events. The second half of the Men's team headed to the Otterbein Twilight on Friday where they got one final tune-up in their respective events. They were led by a big day from the distance runners as they had a strong showing in their final event before the 2022 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was distance runner Izaiha Browning, who competed in two different events throughout the day. He brought home the team's first and only gold medal performance in the Men's 1500. He set a new PR in the event, finishing in 4:03.12 and setting a new PR for the season. Browning was just getting started as he would return a few events later in the Men's 800-meter. While he didn't finish as highly as he did in the 1500, it was still another strong performance for the freshman as he continues his first outdoor season. He would finish fourth in the 800-Meter with a time of 1:58.91 as he set a new PR by breaking the 1:59.00 mark for the first time in his collegiate career.

Before Browning took the course, the day began with the sprinters taking the track. Lorenzo Pelham started things in the 110-meter Hurdles and took home fourth place overall with a time of 14.84 seconds. The mid-distance runners were up next as Julius Hobbs competed in the 400-Meter Dash for the first time this season. He finished in 56.37 seconds, good for a 31st place finish as he continues to train in his different multi events. They would then bring out the hurdles for the 400-meter hurdles and Julian Griffin would bring home a third place finish with a time of  55.90 to wrap up the mid-distance events. The field events would wrap up the day as the jumpers and throwers took the field in their respective events.

Ashton Grounds led the field athletes competing in two different throwing events on the afternoon. He began the day in the Men's discus where he delivered the first of two top five performances on the day. In the discus, Grounds placed fourth overall with a distance of 43.23 meters, finishing with the top distances among MEC competitors. He wrapped up the day in the shot put, where he had his best performance of the day. Grounds finished fifth with a distance of 13.50 meters while Zach Ekey delivered a third place finish with a distance of 14.33 meters. The day would conclude with Kabwe Bwalya competing in two different events for the jumpers. He finished fourth in the triple jump, with a distance of 13.21 meters, and finished 10th in the Long Jump, 5.90 meters. Eli Young wrapped things up in the Triple Jump, finishing third at 13.41 meters.

The Wheeling University Men's track & Field team returns to action on Sunday, May 1st, when they head to the MEC Championships at Glenville State.
