Erie, Pa. – Day two of the Gannon Spring Invitational was supposed to kick-off on Saturday, but wet weather soaked the course and ended up canceling the second round of competition. With the cancelation, the Wheeling Women's Golf team takes home second place in the tournament, while junior
Emily Holzopfel takes home her second straight tournament win of the spring.
They competed against some of the top teams in division II women's Golf, many of which the Cardinals will see again in the Atlantic Regional Invitational in early May. They finished with a team score of 330 and sat 20 strokes behind Gannon for the tournament win. As a team, it was one of the most consistent rounds of the spring season as all five women finished with scores under 90 on the day. Head Coach
Sue Vail has been preaching consistency to her team this entire spring season, and they put it all together over the first 18 holes of the tournament. While their total round score was two strokes higher than the first round of the Greenbrier Invitational, it was an all around upgrade for the team as they now wait two weeks for the Regional Invitational in Kansas City, Missouri.
While the team finished second in the field, junior
Emily Holzopfel ended up winning the tournament giving her back-to-back tournament wins. While things didn't start off the way she wanted them to, she was able to clean things up with a rare Eagle on hole three to bring her score to even. She followed that up with a birdie on hole seven and finished the front nine with a score of -1. She finished the day at +4 on the back nine to bring her score to +3 on the day. She finished one stroke ahead of Gannon's Ditte Peterson to secure the win. The next three Cardinals golfers finished with an 85 as
Nicole Lincicome,
Zoila Herrera, and
Kylee Tolliver hit the mark.
Olivia Zampedro finished off the round with an 87 as she had a 14 stroke improvement from where she sat at the last round of Greenbrier.
With the spring Invitational schedule wrapped up, the Cardinals now wait for two weeks until the NCAA Atlantic Regional tournament May 2nd through 4th in Kansas City, Missouri.
Gannon is one of the teams that Wheeling will see in that event as they compete against some of the best teams across the region. It is the first time since 2016 that the team has competed in the Regional Tournament and they are looking for their first-ever trip as a team to the NCAA National Invitational. With Holzopfel's string of tournament wins, she is pushing herself as one of the top players in the region and will be trying to be the first Cardinals individual to make the NCAA National tournament since former Cardinal Kasey Frazier made it in 2016.
The Wheeling Women's Golf team will be back in action on Monday, May 2nd when they compete in day one of the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament.
