Wheeling, W. Va. – On Thursday night, the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team announced that their non-conference match against D'Youville has been canceled. There will not be a make-up date for the game and the game will not count against either team's record this season.
Wheeling has been on fire as of late, winning two of their last three games, scoring eight or more goals in all three of those games. In their most recent outing, they fell to Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) opponent #4 Mercyhurst 20-8. Despite what the final score might say, Wheeling showed improvement over their game the previous season. Wheeling scored six more goals than their game last year and outscored the Lakers 8-7 in the second half. It was a step forward for the Cardinals as a program and showed that they are gaining experience, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
Leading the way for that Cardinal offense is sophomore
Mike Andersson, who scored his third straight hat trick against Mercyhurst. Anderson led the way with three goals against the Lakers and now leads the GMAC with 20 goals on the season. In the game prior to Mercyhurst, Andersson tied the program record for goals in a single game when he scored seven goals and led Wheeling to a 14-3 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. The other Cardinal that finished with multiple goals in the game was senior defenseman Matt Anderson. Anderson had two goals in the game while causing a turnover and picking up a ground ball.
The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team will be back in action on April 6th when they take on Frostburg State at 7 PM.
