Wheeling, W. Va. – After battling and trying to reach provisional marks through out the season, the Wheeling University Men's Track & Field team is set to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. The Cardinals will have two representatives at the event with
Jabez Reeves competing in the 60-Meter Dash and
Brian Vandusen competing in the High Jump. It will be the first time in both player's career that they have competed in the National Championship as they look to represent Wheeling on the big stage.
Both Reeves and Vandusen competed in the latest Last Chance Meet in Staten Island, NY. as they tried to better their results. In total, six different male athletes went to the event competing in six different events. The Cardinals picked up several top five finishers on the day, with their highest placing being second in the 60-Meter Dash. There were no team scores at the event, but almost every athlete improved their times and distances in their events. While only two of the Cardinals qualified for the National meet, it was a strong showing for Wheeling and gave them some momentum as many of the athletes turn their attention to outdoor season at the end of March.
Jabez Reeves comes in as one of the top 60-Meter dash runners in all of Division II with his season-best time of 6.76 seconds. He broke the Wheeling University school record three times during the season, with two of those record breaking performances coming at Youngstown State. In his first meet of the year back in December, he initially, broke the school record with a time of 6.86 seconds, breaking the initial record by .02 seconds. Then, two meets later, he came back and posted a time of 6.81 seconds, once again at Youngstown state. His fastest run of the year came at Ashland Universirt when he ran a 6.86, winning his fourth gold medal of the season. He then followed that up with a win at the MEC Championships when he ran a 6.81.
Brian Vandusen has been going back and forth between the High Jump and Long Jump throughout the season. However, he qualified for the High Jump after hitting the provo mark and setting a new personal best in the High Jump. He hit the mark of 2.10 meters at the Douglas Raymond invitational and earned a second place finish at the event. He competed in both events at the 2022 MEC Indoor Championships and placed top five in both events. His best finish came in the High Jump, where he just missed the two meter mark. He finished with a height of 1.96 meters, good for the second highest mark in the conference.
The 2022 NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships begin on Friday, March 11th, with the first events set to begin at 11 AM.
