Youngstown, OH. – For the second time this indoor season, the Wheeling University Men's Track and Field team were back at the Watt on the campus of Youngstown State University. The sprinters had a big day once again and another school record was broken, wrapping up a big day for the Cardinals.
In the first event of the year back on December 3
rd, sophomore
Jabez Reeves would break the school record for the 60-meter dash in this building. Fast forward to Friday and the sophomore was at it again as he broke his own record in that same 60-Meter Dash. In the qualifiers, Reeves finished first overall with a time of 6.88 seconds, two-hundredths of a second shy of his record. However, when it came to the finals, Reeves kicked it into another gear, winning the race with a time of 6.85 seconds. He beat the old school record by .01 seconds and won the 60-meter dash for the second straight event. He was the only individual champion of the day for the Cardinals, but there were other strong performers both on the track and the field.
One event later, two different Cardinals notched top 10 finishes in the 60-meter hurdles, with Jullian Griffin placing 2
nd (8.20 seconds) and
Damian Jackson placing 4
th (8.35 seconds). The other top-five finisher in the track events for Wheeling was
Jacob Pielech, who finished third in the men's 400-meter with a time of 49.70, placing in the top three of the event for the second time in a row. There were also a few Cardinal distance runners making their season debuts at YSU. After running Cross Country in the fall, Izaiah Browning made his debut in the Men's 1 Mile run, finishing 44
th with a time of 4:38.22, and CJ Anderson made his debut in the Men's 3,000-meter run, finishing 46
th at 10:32.59.
In the field, it was Wheeling jumper Brian Vandussen leading the way again in the Men's Long Jump. After winning the event at Otterbein University, Vandussen notched another top 10 finish this time around. He finished sixth overall at the event with a season-best 6.86 meters. He finished second among Division II competition, landing .21 meters short of Ashland's Caden Morris. The other four competitors that finished ahead of Vandussen were members of the Youngstown State Track & Field team. Vandussen led the way, but several other Cardinal field athletes had strong days in their respective events.
Freshman Julius Hobbs made his season debut in the Men's Pole Vault and set a collegiate PR with a height of 4.00 meters. He didn't make the finals of the event, but he had a strong flight in his collegiate debut. Another athlete making his season debut in his event was sophomore
Desi James in the Shot Put. He finished 37
th overall, setting a new collegiate PR with a distance of 9.33 meters. That rounded out Wheeling's day in the field but gave them plenty to build off of as the season progresses.
The Wheeling University Men's Track and Field team is back in action next Friday, January 28
th, when they will be back at Youngstown State University for the YSU College Mid Major.
