Bridgeport, W. Va. - With the spring semester in full swing, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced their Fall 2021 MEC Commissioner's Honor Roll team. Wheeling University athletics was well represented on the list, with 117 total athletes being named to the honor roll. It was a big increase for the Cardinals from the previous fall, with 41 new Cardinals making the list.
To qualify for the Commissioner's Honor Roll, an athlete must be a member of the team's active roster and post a grade point average between 3.25 and 3.69 in the semester of their championship season. Wheeling's 117 members of the list are second highest in the MEC, sitting behind the University of Charleston, who had 147 athletes on the list. All eight of Wheeling's MEC affiliated Fall Sports had at least one member of their team on the list, as Wheeling continues to show their excellence in the classroom.
With the biggest roster of any of the fall sports on campus, the Wheeling University Football team had the most athletes on the list, with 49 different players receiving honors. They were followed by the Volleyball team and Men's Soccer team, who had 19 players each, and the women's soccer team, who had 17 players. Women's Cross Country added five players, Men's and Women's Golf each had three, and Men's Cross Country rounded out the list with one player on the list.
Wheeling university student-athletes are dedicated not just to their craft on the field, but to being well-rounded students in the classroom as well. Athletic Director Carrie Hanna is very proud of the student-athletes at Wheeling University and their dedication to their work in the classroom this past semester.
"Our students embody excellence in all aspects of their lives as a student-athlete," said Hanna. "It's a great honor to be recognized for their academic achievements among their peers in the Mountain East Conference."
