California, PA. - It was a big day two of the California University of Pennsylvania Invitational for the Wheeling Women's Golf team finished third at the event. They went from being in sixth place on day two of the event to finishing in third on day three.
As a team, the Women's Golf team improved by 28 strokes, shooting a 329 on the day, and finished third in the field. They placed second among Mountain East Conference (MEC) teams and finished 21 strokes shy of The University of Charleston for second place in the tournament field. After Zoila Herrera (Miami, FL./Coral Gables) led the day on day one, it was a new leader who took control for the Cardinals on day two.
Junior Emily Holzopfel (Ryland, OH./Buckeye Local) bounced back from a rough start on day one and shot a 78 on day two. It was one of just three sub-80 scores of the day and bumped her from finishing in the top 30 on day one, to finish seventh in the field when all is said and done. She finished with a 166 in the tournament and went from being second on the team to being one of the top finishers not only for Wheeling but in the whole tournament.
Another player who took a big jump on day two of the event was freshman Nicole Lincicome. Lincicome had an average collegiate golf debut but bounced back shooting an 80 on day two to finish with a 173 to finish tied for 21st in the field. Herrera finished third for Wheeling equalling her score from the previous day shooting an 87 and finishing the tournament with a score of 174.
Rounding out the field for Wheeling was senior Olivia Zampedro (Mentor, OH./Lake Catholic) and Junior Kylee Tolliver (Reedsville, OH./Eastern). Zampedro shot an 88 and Tolliver shot an 84 to finish with scores of 177 and 186 respectively. In total, four of the five golfers for Wheeling finished with a score under 180, while also finishing in the top 30 of the event.
The Wheeling Women's Golf team is back in action next week when they head to The University of Charleston Invitational from September 13th through the 14th.
