Box Score Wheeling, W. Va. – On a rainy Sunday afternoon, the Wheeling University Women's Gold team (3-4-1, 2-3-1) welcomed in Alderson Broaddus Mountain East Conference (MEC) match-up. It took 110 minutes to play, but neither team could gain an advantage as Wheeling tied 1-1.
Last Sunday, these two teams met in Philippi, West Virginia in a game that Wheeling won 3-2. It took overtime in the first meeting when senior
Braedynn Porter scored the game-winning goal in the 93
rd minute of the game. This time around, the Cardinals were hoping to end the game in regulation and bounce back after falling to West Liberty last time out. A win would move their conference record back to .500 and move them towards the middle of the pack in the MEC.
Early on, Wheeling scored the first goal of the day just eight minutes into the game. Wheeling brought the ball up into their offensive zone, and junior
Shiann Thomas brought it up the field. She took her shot and found the net at the 8:23 mark to give Wheeling a 1-0 lead. It was Thomas's first goal of the season and gave the Cardinals the early advantage. Wheeling also scored the first goal of the game at Alderson Broaddus, only this time they were hoping to hold onto the lead.
However, 28 minutes later, the Battlers got on the board off of a corner kick. Riley Gelsinger took the shot after the ball caromed off of a few different Battlers players, and found the net in the 36
th minute. The score tied the game at 1-1 and brought things back to square one. Neither team would score for the remainder of the half, and the teams would head into the break with the score tied. The shots were pretty much even, with Alderson Broaddus holding a slight 5-4 advantage. In the second half, Wheeling used a more aggressive approach as they tried to get on the board.
The results showed as Wheeling took the majority of the second-half shots, outshooting 11-3. Senior
Braedynn Porter took a majority of those shots in the second half, but her biggest chance came in the 86
th minute. She had a shot two on one with a chance to give Wheeling the lead, but it ended up being saved by the keeper, and the game moved to overtime. The teams battled over the extra 20 minutes, but neither team was able to score as the game ended in that 1-1 tie, and Wheeling moved to 2-3-1 with the tie.
Porter led the Cardinal offense, taking a team-leading six shots, three on goal, in the tie. Thomas finished behind her with two. Shots, and the lone goal on the day for the Cardinals. Senior Goalkeeper
Mikayla Yarwood made a season-high 10 saves on the day and allowed just one goal to sneak through. The tie keeps Wheeling in the fifth spot in the MEC North Division, as they sit a game and a half behind fourth-place Notre Dame College. As the schedule moves into October, Wheeling will look to rack up wins to get back to the postseason.
