Painesville, Ohio - The Wheeling University women's soccer team continued its season-opening road swing Wednesday evening, falling 4-1 to Lake Erie. The Cardinals now sit at 0-2 on the season as they continue their first season under Head Coach Jaclyn Ketter.
Lake Erie struck twice in the opening seven minutes to establish an early advantage. Ava Moore opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Kristeena Erras doubled the Storm's lead less than a minute later. Erras added her second goal of the night in the 28th minute, sending Lake Erie into halftime with a 3-0 lead. The Storm held an 8-0 advantage in shots during the opening half.
Wheeling came out with more offensive pressure after halftime, recording all six of its shots in the second half. Lake Erie added to its advantage in the 77th minute when Laney Colvin scored off an assist from Moore, but the Cardinals continued to battle and eventually got on the board in the 83rd minute.
Jeanery Diaz converted a penalty kick for her second goal of the season, giving Wheeling a late offensive spark for the second consecutive game.
The Cardinals finished the night with six shots, putting three on goal, while Lake Erie recorded 17 shots and 10 attempts on frame. Wheeling's goalkeepers combined for six saves, with
Katelyn MacInnis making two saves in the opening half and
Madison Reis-Elbara adding four after halftime. Wheeling will close its three-game road stretch Sunday, September 6, when the Cardinals travel to Point Park before returning home September 9 to host Frostburg State in their 2026 home opener.
