Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University women's soccer team will look to bounce back from its season-opening loss on Wednesday when the Cardinals travel to Lake Erie College for a 4 p.m. matchup. The contest will be Wheeling's second straight road game to open the 2026 campaign, as the Cardinals look to pick up their first win of the season under Head Coach Jaclyn Ketter. Wheeling holds a 3-2 all-time record against Lake Erie, including a 3-0 victory in the most recent meeting between the teams on September 2, 2021.
The Cardinals enter Wednesday's matchup looking to regroup after falling 5-1 to Walsh in last Thursday's season opener. Wheeling battled the Cavaliers through the opening half before Walsh broke through late in the first half and eventually pulled away after halftime. The Cardinals were able to find the back of the net late in the contest, with Jeanery Diaz scoring in the 79th minute to provide Wheeling with its first goal of the season.
Diaz's goal provided an important offensive moment for the Cardinals in their first game under Ketter, while Wheeling's goalkeeping tandem of Madison Reis-Elbara and Katelyn MacInnis combined for 11 saves against the Cavaliers. Reis-Elbara recorded six saves, while MacInnis added five as the two helped keep Wheeling within reach during portions of the contest. The Cardinals will look to build on those individual efforts while continuing to find consistency on both sides of the ball.
One of the biggest storylines heading into Wednesday will be how Wheeling responds to its opening-night result. The Cardinals showed flashes offensively against Walsh but were limited to four shots, while the Cavaliers generated 27 attempts. Finding a way to create more offensive opportunities while maintaining the defensive foundation that kept Wheeling competitive throughout much of last season will be key against the Storm. Wednesday also provides another opportunity for Ketter's young roster to build chemistry and gain experience together in a competitive game environment.
Lake Erie enters the matchup looking for its first win as well after opening the season with a 0-0 tie at Indiana (PA) on August 27 and a 4-0 loss to Frostburg State on August 29. Against Frostburg State, the Storm managed seven shots in the contest, with Ava Moore recording a team-high three attempts. Goalkeeper Morgan Vanmeter made six saves against the Bobcats. After Wednesday's trip to Lake Erie, Wheeling will make one more road stop at Point Park on September 6 before returning to Bishop Schmitt Field on September 9 for its home opener against Frostburg State.
