AUSTIN, Texas (June 23) - Wheeling University All-American
Danielle Stewart (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) was named a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Track & Field/Cross Country Third-Team Academic All-American announced the organization Wednesday afternoon.
Stewart is the first Wheeling Track & Field or Cross Country athlete to ever receive the distinction – considered to be the most prestigious academic award in collegiate athletics. She is the second Cardinal this past academic year to be selected for the honor, joining men's soccer senior Andres Da Silva, who earned a nod this past December. Stewart is also just the seventh student-athlete in Wheeling University history to be tabbed an Academic All-American.
Stewart was
named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American for qualifying for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in the pole vault this past March. Her PR vault of 3.93 meters (12 feet, 10.75 inches) at the Youngstown State Invitational this season qualified her for the event and also earned her USTFCCCA All-Region honors. Stewart is a two-time Mountain East Conference Outdoor Champion in Pole Vault, took second place in 2019 and won the inaugural MEC Indoor Championship in the Pole Vault this season.
In the classroom, Stewart is a nursing major with a 3.88 GPA at Wheeling and was also a member of the 2020 MEC Academic All-Conference Team.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative 3.30 GPA or higher, must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have been a first-team selection in their district. Nominees must also have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America teams include student-athletes from all eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
Stewart was the only Women's Cross Country or Track & Field All-American selection from the Mountain East Conference (MEC).
