Two PR’s Highlight Day 3 of MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships as Women Take Eighth in the Field

Morgantown, W. Va. - After two long days of competition, the Wheeling University Women's Track & Field team hit the competition field for day three of the 2026 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It was another day of PR's for the Cardinals, with two more being added to the list, as the Cardinals finished eighth in the team standings, scoring 41.5 points. The team doubled their total outdoor point total from a season ago, while finishing with three athletes on the podium.

The Cardinals added their third and final podium athlete on day three when Autumn Kerchner led a trio of Cardinals in the discus throw. The freshman would take third overall in the field with a score of 41.09 meters, hitting the mark on her second throw of the day. She came out of the gate strong, hitting 40.74 meters on throw one before hitting the mark that ultimately got her on the podium on her second throw of the day. It was a 2.5 meter PR for the freshman, who rounded out a big tournament in the field events. She competed in three events across the three days of competition, finishing top 10 in all three events, and top five in two of the three events. She would score 12.5 points for the Cardinals across the three days, accountin for nearly half of her team's total points in the effort.

The other two Cardinals to compete in the Discus were JaLynn Shapley and Amber Yoho, with the dup adding the second PR to the day. The PR effort would come courtesy of Shapley, who qualified for the finals for the first time in her career. It was her first throw of the day that would get her there, when she hit the mark of 35.97 meters. She was able to make the final qualifying spot for the Cardinals, and that same mark was enough to help her finish ninth overall in the field. Yoho would round out the event taking 16th overall, throwing a distance of 31.36 meters. She would hit the mark on her second throw of the day, bringing an end to a strong weekend of field events for the Cardinals.

The final event of day three was the Women's 5000-Meter Run with junior Madison Conrad taking the track. She would get out to a fast start, leading the pack through the races first lap and getting to the first checkpoint in 39.66 seconds. She was able to keep a steady pace throughout the day, and would end up finishing 14th overall with a time of 19:23.31.

Following the event, the MEC held their annual awards ceremony, where the athletes across the three days received their honors from MEC Commissioner Reid Amos. After putting just one athlete on the podium last year, the Cardinals were well represented at this year's event, putting three on the podium across the field events. Kerchner, Fenne Sienaert, and Jenna Smith each received their medals for their events, with Smith earning her Conference Championship award in the Women's Pole Vault.

The Wheeling University Women's Outdoor Track & Field team does not have any postseason meets scheduled as of now, but will look to continue their success in any last chance meets they might schedule
