Stewart earns CoSIDA Academic All-District honors

WHEELING, W.Va. (May 29) - Wheeling University All-American Danielle Stewart (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) was named to the 2019-20 Women's Cross Country and Track & Field College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 2 Team announced the organization Friday afternoon.

Stewart is now eligible for consideration for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team – considered to be the most prestigious academic award in collegiate athletics – which will be announced next month.

Stewart was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American for qualifying for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in the pole vault this past March. Her PR vault of 3.93 meters (12 feet, 10.75 inches) at the Youngstown State Invitational this season qualified her for the event and also earned her USTFCCCA All-Region honors. Stewart is a two-time Mountain East Conference Outdoor Champion in Pole Vault, took second place in 2019 and won the inaugural MEC Indoor Championship in the Pole Vault this season.

In the classroom, Stewart is a nursing major with a 3.88 GPA at Wheeling and was also a member of the 2020 MEC Academic All-Conference Team. To qualify for the academic all-district honors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.30 GPA or higher and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution. Nominees must also have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.

Stewart was the only District II Women's Cross Country and Track & Field selection from the Mountain East Conference (MEC). The other selections came from member schools of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Stewart becomes the third CoSIDA Academic All-District selection at Wheeling University during this past academic year. She joins Andres Da Silva (Men's Soccer) and Haley Kramer (Volleyball), who earned the honor in the fall. Da Silva was later named as the sixth Academic All-American in school history.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams include student-athletes divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
