Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit Men's Basketball program hosted the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State Thursday night with a 7-game win streak on the line. The Cardinals featured three players in double figures as Jesuit pushed it to 8 in a row, downing WV State 78-71.
Junior guard
Eric Siefert led the Cardinals in the first half with nine points and two rebounds in a low-scoring first half. Freshman forward
Haywood Highsmith hit the boards hard for eight rebounds as Jesuit had a 26-21 advantage in rebounding in the first 20 minutes of the game. Jesuit outshot WV State 37.8% to 31% to go into the intermission up 33-23.
Fritts and Siefert heated up in the second half to break the game open for the Cardinals. Siefert finished the game with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Fritts added 15 points, three rebounds, five assists, and three steals in 28 minutes of play.
Highsmith had the only double-double of the game, finishing with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Jesuit outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 42 to 36 on the night.
WJU led by as many as 17 points in the second half, before finishing the Yellow Jackets off, 78-71.
The victory improves the overall record of the Men's Basketball program to 19-8 and 14-7 in the Mountain East Conference. The Cardinals have now won 13 of their last 14 games. Going into the final game of the regular season, Wheeling Jesuit is tied for third place in the MEC.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday Feb. 28
th at 4pm when they host their crosstown rival, West Liberty University, in the last MEC regular season game of the year.
