The Frazier File – A Stellar Career at “Home”

WHEELING, W.Va. – Over the past three years, the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University has been a second home for Kasey Frazier. A home the senior women's golfer has fully embraced and made her mark upon the Cardinal program.

Frazier, who is from Galloway, N.J., has made an impact on every classmate, teammate, and professor she has encountered. From the first day, she started to build her historic WJU career both in the classroom and on the golf course.

The Absebami High graduate aims to continue making her mark and helping the Cardinal women's golf team at the Mountain East Conference Championships on Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 12-14, at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W.Va.

"Kasey is not just a good golfer, but is a wonderful leader for our team and school," WJU women's golf head coach Sue Vail said. "Kasey is a coach's dream. She works as hard in the classroom as she does on the course. She is the most accomplished women's golfer we have ever had at WJU since the program started in 2003. It is absolutely remarkable to see what she has accomplished."

In her first three and a half years at WJU, Frazier has won 14 tournaments, by far the most of any Cardinal golfer in program history. She earned the 2012 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards. The fourth-year Cardinal followed up with the MEC Player of the Year each of the last two years. She won the 2013 NCAA East Super Regional as a sophomore and has reached the NCAA East Super Regional Tournament in each of her first three seasons and NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament twice.

Along with her playing accolades, Frazier has recorded over a 3.5 grade point average and achieved Dean's List Honors in multiple semesters. Frazier also became the first WJU women's golfer to receive Women's Collegiate Golf All-American Scholar Honors. Kasey will earn her bachelor's degree in elementary education after she completes her student teaching in the 2016 spring semester. Frazier plans to pursue her master's degree to one day become a reading specialist.

"I chose WJU because I knew I would be challenged both on the course and in the classroom," Frazier stated. "I absolutely loved the small campus and the atmosphere that Wheeling Jesuit had to offer, so it made my decision to come here pretty easy."

Frazier burst on to the collegiate scene with a remarkable freshman season. She claimed medalist honors in five tournaments and helped the WJU team win four of those five tournaments. Frazier shot a season-low one over par round of 73 in the Mercyhurst Invitational in her first ever collegiate tournament. She also went on to win both conference tournaments – the WVIAC Championship and WVIAC Southern Regional Tournament.

Frazier's sophomore campaign picked up right where her freshman year left off. Kasey collected three more medalist honors including the remarkable 2013 NCAA East Super Regional win held at the Joliet (Ill.) Country Club. Frazier also won the first ever MEC Championship with three rounds in the 70's.

The Cardinal golfer went on and recorded four more junior season victories. She posted wins at both the Urbana and Gannon tournaments, while she also won both the MEC Championship and MEC Southern Tournament. The highlight of her season came when she fired three rounds in the 70's and won the MEC Championship by 10 shots. She earned her way back to the Super Regionals where she finished tied for 13th overall and second of all individual entries.

As the 2015 fall season comes to an end, Frazier has added two additional medalist honors. Kasey shot rounds of 77 and 73 and captured the top spot at the WJU hosted MEC Northern Invite tournament held at Moundsville Country Club. In the following week, she claimed her fourth consecutive Gannon Michael Corbet Classic medalist honor. She also placed second out of 60 golfers at the Ashland Eagle Invitational.

Frazier believes her most memorable WJU win is this season at Gannon University.

"It marks the fourth time I have been lucky enough to win this event and it was one of my lowest two-day totals," Frazier said. "I was also very fortunate to play with great people so it was time well spent."

The praise coach Vail gives Kasey is not a one-way street. Frazier thinks very highly of her coach as well, and doesn't think she would be in this situation without her.

"Coach (Vail) taught me that we will always have both good and bad days. She has a funny quote that we always use. She says that sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. It's something we laugh about, but it's very true."

When asked what one goal she would love to accomplish her senior year, Frazier had a very admirable response.

"I want to make it to the NCAA Super Regional as a team. I have been there three years in a row as an individual, but it would be amazing for my teammates to be there with me," Frazier stated.

Frazier went on to add, "I worked all summer with my swing coach Bruce Chelucci to try and keep my scoring average below 75, so that would be my individual goal I am working towards."

In the end, Frazier is sure she made the right decision by coming to Wheeling Jesuit University.

"My professors make me feel important and my teammates are always at my side. The community I have been lucky enough to be a part of is so kind and humble. I will really miss being a student-athlete at WJU," stressed the senior golfer.

Frazier will lead the Cardinals into their final fall regular season event starting Monday. She seeks to make it a perfect four conference individual titles and help the Cardinals take the team title prize back to her other "home" on the Wheeling campus.
