Wheeling, W. Va. - After competing across three days of competition at the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Women's Golf Championships, the Wheeling University Women's Golf team finished third overall in the tournament field. For their efforts, the team would have three golfers win All-MEC honors, marking three straight seasons that they have had multiple award winners. Junior Sawyer Hobbs would earn a spot on the First Team All-MEC team, while junior Dorthea Evebo earned Honorable Mention honors.
Hobbs earned the first All-Conference honor of her career after leading the Cardinals at the championship event. She would finish with a three-round score of 245 (+29) and earned a spot on the conference's All-Tournament team with a fifth place finish at the event. After shooting an 84 on day one, Sawyer would turn it around on the second day of competition, dropping a tournament low 80 in the second round of play. She would shoot two birdies on the day, both of which came on the back nine, as she propelled herself into the top five of the event. She would end up adding one stroke in the final round, shooting an 81, but was able to hold her standing in the top five of the field. She has been the Cardinal's leading golfer this season, and finished out a strong fall season for the Cardinals.
Tilly Jones would also take home the first All-Conference honors of her career, earning Second Team All-MEC honors. She would tie for seventh in the field, shooting a three-day score of 249 (+33), and produced a better score on each day of the competition. Her best round would come on the final day when she shot an 82 (+10) to round out the event. She finished strong, shooting birdie on each of the final two holes, earning her a spot in the top 10 of the event. She would end up to totaling four birdies across the three rounds of competition, with two of those four coming in the final round. She would shoot an 83 (+11) on day two, while adding an 84 (+12) in the first round of competition. Jones finished off a strong fall season that saw her finish as one of the top two Cardinals in every event this season.
The other Cardinal to earn All-Conference honors was Dorthea Evebo, who had a big come back over the final two rounds to finish tied for 17th in the field. She would shoot 251 (+51) between the three rounds, but it was a big bounce back between round one and the final two rounds that earned her the All-Conference honor. After shooting a 91 across the first 18 holes of play, she would have the biggest day two turnaround, dropping two strokes off her score to shoot an 89 as she climbed the individual ladder. She would save her best performance of the tournament for the final day, taking two more strokes off her score to shoot an 87. It would be a +7 on the front nine that led the way for the junior as she earned her first All-MEC honor of her career.
With the announcement of the Women's Golf All-MEC team, the Wheeling University Athletic Department has now had seven student-athletes earn All Conference honors this season. They added one more All-MEC honor then they had a season ago, and the most they have had since the 2022 season when they won the MEC Women's Golf Championship. The last team to be honored was the Wheeling Men's Golf team, who had four All-MEC honors following their championship event.
The Wheeling University Women's Golf team returns to action on Monday, October 26, when they head to the Ohio Dominican Invitational.
