ELKINS, W.Va. - The Mountain East Conference Women's Golf Championships are almost here as the Wheeling University Women's Golf Team gets set to play three rounds. The Cardinals' highest placement this year came in the first invitational of the year when they finished fourth out of 14 teams. Last year the team came in sixth place out of eight teams in the championships.
It is a new year, and this year we have seen new faces dominate the rankings for the Cardinals. The transfer junior pair of Sawyer Hobbs and Tilly Jones have been stellar for the Cardinals so far. Hobbs has finished first on the Cardinals team in every single invitational she has played in this season. She had three top ten finishes on the year and tied for third as her highest placement on the year. In the only three-round invitational they played all season, Hobbs tied for 23rd and went 19 over par. She has also been awarded the MEC women's golfer of the week two times this season.
Jones has come in second place on the team in three of the four invitationals played this season. She has one top ten finish and is tied for sixth place in that invitational. In the most recent invitational, she tied for 54th place and shot 30 over par.
The only other golfer who has taken second on the team is junior Dorthea Evebo. Evebo took second place in the one round played at the West Chester University Battlefield Classic. She hit 13 over par and came in 13th place overall. A strong showing of what she can do and that she can step up. She has a third and fourth place finish on the Cardinals team this season as well.
Sophomore Ivana Alvarez has finished top four three times for the Cardinals this season. In the lone three-round invitational the team golfed in this year, she shot 46 over par and came in third on her team and 81st overall.
The championships will be held October 11 through 13, with one round being played a day.
