ELKINS, W.Va. - The Wheeling University Women's Golf Team placed third in the Mountain East Conference Women's Golf Championships. Through the three rounds of play, they shot 177 over par with 393 total shots. This is a three-spot improvement from last year's Fall MEC Championships.
The Cardinals had a fifth-place finish from junior Sawyer Hobbs, who shot nine over par in round three and 29 over par through three rounds. She started day three with a bogey on hole one but bounced back with a par. She continued to hit two more bogeys back to back and would pick up two more later on the front nine. After the first par, she then came back and hit three more, totaling four on the front nine and completing it five over par. She improved by a stroke on the back nine hitting par on hole ten and also got two birdies on holes 11 and 13. In total she had four pars on the back nine, finishing four over par.
Next for the Cardinals tying for seventh place was junior Tilly Jones, as she shot ten over par today and 33 over through three rounds. The front nine proved to be tough for Jones; she did pick up four pars but still went ten over par. She did not let this start phase her, as she had the best nine-hole stretch of any Cardinal in this tournament on the back nine. Jones started it with two pars, then a bogey; she picked up three more pars, another bogey, and then ended strong, picking up two birdies on holes 17 and 18. She completed the back nine, going even.
Tying for 17th place was junior Dorthea Evebo, who hit 15 over par today and 51 over through the three rounds of play. Evebo was able to hit four pars on the front nine today and picked up three bogeys and two double bogeys, finishing the front nine seven over par. She started the back nine by hitting three pars in a row and ended up finishing with five pars all together on the back nine. She completed the back nine, going eight over par.
Once again rounding out the top four for the Cardinals tying for 20th place was sophomore Ivana Alvarez, who hit 23 over par today and 64 over par through the three rounds. Alvarez was able to pick up three pars on the front nine, going 13 over par. On the back nine she hit a bridge on hole 15 and two pars on holes 14 and 17 as she finished the back nine 10 over par.
Next up for the women is the Ohio Dominican University Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. This event will take place October 26 and 27.
