COLUMBUS, OHIO—The Wheeling University Women's Golf Team has their final invitation of the season as they head to Columbus, Ohio, for the Ohio Dominican Invitational. They recently played in the Mountain East Conference Women's Golf Championships, where the team placed 3rd out of ten teams.
The Cardinals have had a strong junior transfer duo in Sawyer Hobbs and Tilly Jones. In the MEC championships, Hobbs finished shooting 29 over par and securing fifth place overall. Rounds two and three were her best in the championships, as in round two she went eight over par and hit a birdie in the round. In round three she hit four pars on the front nine, going five over par. On the back nine she was able to improve one stroke and even hit two birdies. Hobbs has two top-five finishes and three top-three placements on the season.
Right behind Hobbs is Tilly Jones, who in the MEC Championships finished tied for seventh and shot 33 over par. Jones finished the championships off with her best round of the three coming in the final round. She shot ten over par and had nine pars, and two back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to end the championship. Jones has been just what the Cardinals needed, as she has two top ten finishes this season.
Next is another junior, Dorthea Evebo, who finished the championships 51 over par and tied for 17th. Evebo had her best round in the last round just like teammate Jones. In this round she shot 15 over par and picked up nine pars through the front and back nine. In round one she shot 19 over par and had five pars all together. In round two she shot 17 over par but also had a bridge on hole eight.
Finally, there is sophomore Ivana Alvarez, who tied for 20th place and shot 64 over par. Alvarez had her best round in the second round, where she shot 19 over par. In this round she picked up two back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14. She also had three pars through the 18 holes.
Coming off an impressive championship performance with a two-week break in between, they will look to capture the same, if not more, success heading into their final invitational of the fall season.
