Cardinals Get Bats Going for Two Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball squad picked up a pair of wins over the Mercyhurst Lakers on Tuesday, a team that had defeated them just three days previous.

The Cardinals bats blew up for 14 runs in game one, defeating the Lakers 14-6, and in game two WJU scored three runs late to take a 3-2 win to secure the double header.

On Saturday, WJU fell to the Lakers 6-7 at a tournament in Salem, Virginia powered by a four-run, 6th inning. This time around, the Cardinals studied their notes on what they needed to do to improve.

"We made some adjustments in the box, and just put the ball in play more," said WJU head coach Kelli Williams. "I think on Saturday we were trying too hard, and not just taking care of the little things."

"In the past we've had a hard time keeping our concentration for two games, and struggle because we get unfocused," Coach Williams added. "We're starting to come together as a team now though, and are starting to work as one. Wins will come if we continue to do that."

In game one, the Cardinals found themselves 5-2 heading into the 5th inning before unleashing a barrage of 10 runs en-route to the 14-6 win.  WJU's bats were on fire in the 5th, highlighted by an Erika Jusko double to center that brought in Angie Reddick, Kelsi Thompson and Jarah Ice for three RBIs.

In game two, it was a defensive struggle throughout for both teams after MU got on the board early with a 2-0 lead in the 2nd.  Then in the bottom of the 3rd, the Thompson crushed a double down the left field line to drive in Ice. Reddick then pumped a double into center that was inches from going over the fence, and Thompson turned the corner to score. Morgan Stohlman sealed the game for the Cards, driving in Reddick on a single down the left side, leading to the 3-2 win.

WJU's Ali Smith picked up the win, pitching a complete game and holding the Lakers to just a pair of runs off eight hits.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday when they are scheduled to take on MEC foe Urbana in double header action starting at 1pm.
