Cardinal Women’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against Rams

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team got their season underway on Sunday, dropping their season opener 18-12, to Shepherd University.

Freshman Elizabeth Hales (Orlando Fla.) led all scorers with 5 goals in the game. WJU captain Jessie Tufnell added 3 goals.

Rounding out the scoring for WJU were Shelby McClure, Sara Fitzsimon, Paige Plesich, and Danielle Kirby.  Each added one goal apiece.

Defensively, Freshman net-minder, Maire Austin, recorded 6 saves in the contest.
Shepherd improves to 2-0, while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 0-1.  The Cardinals return to action on Saturday when they host Chowan University for a 1:00pm match.

"Considering it was our first run outside, I was pleased with our performance. More importantly though, I think the girls were happy with their performance as well," said WJU head coach Tim Florence. "I think it was a great springboard for our season, and it showed how much potential we have."

The Cardinals are scheduled to play their 2014 home opener on Saturday, March 1st against Chowan University. However, the ongoing construction of Bishop Schmitt Field has forced the game to be moved to Alderson Broaddus University. Weather has delayed construction, but the field is due to be finished within the next two weeks.
