Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team traveled to Fairmont State on Thursday for an important Mountain East conference tussle, coming away on the wrong end of a 80-74 decision. The Cardinals were neck-and-neck with the Falcons for virtually the entire game, but were overcome FSU's paint play in the last three minutes of the game.
With the loss, WJU drops three spots in the Mountain East conference standings to sixth place with a 4-3 record in MEC play, and a 6-4 overall record.
"I think we played well, we've just gotta clean up a few things," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We needed to rebound better tonight. Their #32 got hot and we had a bit of trouble with him, but overall we played pretty good."
Fairmont State was led by #32 Stevie Browning, who led all scorers in the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals were fairly even across the board with three players scoring in double digits, and a fourth adding nine, with a team shooting percentage of 56% in the second half.
For the Cardinals,
Andre Harris and
Matt Stewart each had 19 points. Harris was especially big on the boards with 11 rebounds to his name as well.
Eric Siefert put in another solid performance for WJU as well with 18 points.
The Cards will have a chance to claw their way up the conference table on Saturday when they take to the road again to face Glenville state who sits one place ahead of them in 5
th place, and potentially move ahead of Charleston as well depending on the outcome of their next game. WJU, Glenville, Charleston and WV Wesleyan are creating a logjam in the MEC standings with each team carrying a 4-3 record.
The only game separating WJU with Glenville and Charleston is one more non-conference victory, and a 7-4 non-conference record.
